CITY COUNCIL MEETING AUGUST 5, 2025

Post by BillNC »

This is a quick recap of the August meeting of the Newton City Council meeting. Council member Danner was absent due to a prior commitment. The consent agenda (please refer to a copy of the agenda posted on Newtonnc.gov) was approved without discussion. The only item of Old Business involved correcting a significant error in meeting minutes (prior meeting) regarding Rezoning Application 2024-06 for the McCombs Investments LLC land on Burris Road. The correction passed unanimously. Two presentations were made, the first by contracted code enforcement officer Chad Powell (no relation) from the Western Piedmont Council of Governments. The second presentation was made by Fire Chief Kevin Yoder and involved an update on the almost 6 million dollar Startown fire station. The usual back slapping self serving comments were made by Yoder and the majority of the elected officials. The project is definitely on afterburners to get the bidding process up and running and construction underway. During the public comment section, eight persons spoke on various topics which included: Soldier's Reunion; Sanctuary City status; Restricting Facebook comments; Fees and charges; trash in East Newton (Mayor disagreed); Misuse of 26th St; Dog Park; Walkway from Eastside to Food Lion; Government open communication. Thanks to all citizens for your interest.

The September meeting of the City Council is upcoming. The LBTGQ+ community has expressed their intent to return to City Council for answers and responses to their concerns. These concerns have to date fallen on death ears.
