NCCS Forced Consolidation or Not?

Post by BillNC »

I am fairly comfortable with passing on this most significant, historic information. School consolidation has reared its ugly head from time to time during my lifetime here in Newton. I am a proud graduate of the NCCS and feel confident that many would agree that our system has produced a goodly number of properly education high schoolers. Most of our graduates and attendees are proud to call ourselves Red Devils.

Apparently, there is a growing effort to eliminate the Newton Conover City School System and fold it into the County school system. The birth of this most recent consolidation effort is not known to me, but I understand that a resolution will be issued by the County Commission in July (most likely) setting forth a multi-year plan to consolidate NCCS into CCS (and at least to my understanding, to the exclusion of the Hickory City School System).

Whether you support or oppose or don't know your position on this matter, now is the time to think about the impact and significance of this effort and LET YOUR FEELINGS BE KNOWN.

As you know, I am all about getting information to the public, so, CATAWBA COUNTY, CATAWBA COUNTY SCHOOLS, NEWTON CONOVER SCHOOL SYSTEM, CITY OF NEWTON AND CITY OF CONOVER, TELL US WHAT IS GOING ON! NOW!

Newton-Conover City Schools will not "go quietly into that good night". Rest assured. Stay tuned.

I know that as of this past year at closing NNE was asking anyone in Catawba County School system that wanted to transfer over could do so. I've never seen that before.

NCCS has some excess capacity, so that might have been the reason. Thirty some years ago, I was able to get my son into NCC schools even though I lived in the Maiden district (Nottingham Estates).

I attended the NCCS School Board meeting tonight, June 16, 2025. A large number of speakers made their feelings known--NO CONSOLIDATION. The school board passed a strong resolution OPPOSING the expected call for forced consolidation by the County Commissioners. A watershed moment for Catawba County for sure. Here is one place to let your feelings known.

Update: The County Commissioners put this effort on hold for the time being. The issue itself is by no means dead, but options continue to be explored. Stay tuned.
